temperamental
everything but the girl
altlantic/wea, 1999
Mood—Beat-driven, dense, damp, and warm.
Sample: "Lullaby Of Clubland"
Thoughts— While their breakout single "Missing" was overplayed, it also represented a major shift in the duo's style. It's a testament to their quality that I like their music from both sides of the shift, not to mention that "Missing" no longer annoys me.
The simple fact is that Tracey Thorn has a brilliant, unique voice. This carries EBTG through any style, and makes her solo projects feel less like a diversion than an extension of the band.
Temperamental is by far their most club-oriented album they've put out to date, fully embracing the electronic and remix culture that made them popular. Tracey's lyrics speak, as they usually do, toward love, youth, and growing up. Your typical pop fare, with very thoughtful implementation.
"Hatfield 1980" is by far my favorite track, but really they're all good. "Blame" is nice and simple, with probably the strongest driving beat of the album, and "No Difference" is both strong and heartbreaking all at once, something that's not to be missed.
Recommended? Definitely pick this one up.
