virgin records us, 2003
Mood—Low, quiet, dark.
Sample: "Butterfly Caught"
Thoughts— Massiv Attack has always felt like a group that I'm supposed to like, but I don't think I like them all that much. It has mostly to do with the regular vocalist.
You see, I was tricked by songs like "Protection" and "Better Things", both of which feature vocals by Tracey Thorn, into thinking that Massive Attack is awesome. However, it turns out that I really like the instrumentation, but could definitely do without Horace Andy ruining several of the tracks with a nasal, boring voice.
You won't find anything as good as "Teardrop" on 100th Window, I'm afraid. Still, there are some good tracks, and Sinead O'Connor's performance on "A Prayer For England" is especially enjoyable.
I really do wish that anything with Horace Andy singing would be turned into an instrumental. It might make this album a more worthy purchase for me. That's just not my style. I'm sure others love it, though. I'm also one of the few people who were happy when Morcheeba got a new vocalist!
Recommended? Nah, it's alright, but you'll be better off sticking with Mezzanine.
