the catnap
margo
tsk! tsk! records, 1993
Mood—Like a sunroom on a cold tuesday morning.
Sample: "My Cat"
Thoughts— Onc again my tactic of buying albums based only on the cover design pays off!
I picked this one up on a whim and was thoroughly pleased by it's simple song structure, glitchy instrumentation, and shy vocal stylings. Each song feels delicate and precious.
The album title lends me to believe this album was written entirely with cats (or a cat) in mind, and the music backs that belief up. For some reason, the songs just sound like cat.
The Catnap is a bit of an art project and I suspect the band was one too. Margo feels like a concept more than a band. Nonetheless, what they've produced is most definitely musical and not some sort of abstract mess.
I used the song "Sifits" in a video project during college... a quirky instrumental with a plodding baseline. "Luminous" has a bit of carnival whimsy, and "Warm" is reflective of its title (and probably the stand out track, for me)
Recommended? If you're a cat person, yes. I don't know if this is an album for doggy types.
