gettin high on your own supply
apollo 440
sony, 2000
Mood—A mixed bag... upbeat, instense, fun
Sample: "Heart Go Boom"
Thoughts— I purchased this album because Apollo 440 did a remix of the theme to Lost In Space for the movie adaptation of the classic television show. I really liked that movie when it came out (Gary Oldman always rules) so went out and picked up Gettin High On Your Own Supply right away.
While the movie didn't age well, this album did. It is extremely fun to listen to, and unlike the movie doesn't contain glaring issues with overdubbing and has a very minimal amount of Matt LeBlanc in it. Seriously, he is featured on the Lost In Space track.
I don't think there's an easy way to describe this type of album. It is probably considered "electronic" music by record stores, because it uses loops and is somewhat dance-y in places, but there are plenty of vocals, guitars, piano, and other real-world instrumentation. While songs like "Stop The Rock" and "Blackbeat" have an aggressive, rockish posture, other tracks like "The Machine In The Ghost" take on a sort of reggae/dub vibe. "For Forty Days" features an intense yet soothing piano/percussion combination. "The Perfect Crime", the final track of the album, is the most "electronic" of the bunch, and as the name implies, it would be the perfect soundtrack to a heist movie.
All in all, a great album.
Recommended? By all means, yes.
