virgin records, 2001
Mood—Dancey, upbeat, robot-friendly.
Sample: "Digital Love"
Thoughts— The first four songs on Discovery are genius, but the rest are just sorta there.
For me, Daft Punk suffers from the sort of repetition that I find boring. I completely avoided their latest studio album because of exactly that, and you can see them heading toward that somewhat mindless minimalism in Discovery.
As I said, the first four tracks are simply amazing. They really should be listened to in order, all the way through. As soon as "Harder, Better, Faster Stronger" is over, though, it gets muddy. The listener is slapped in the face by the hyperactive "Crescendolls", then put down for a nap by the interlude "Nightvision". The beginning of this album has a vision, but the vision seems to get lost real quick.
While most of the tracks on Disocvery are decent, the only ones aside from the first four that are inspiring are "Voyager", "Something About Us" and to a lesser extent "Face To Face". I could do without the brash "Short Circuit" and "Crescendolls" completely.
Taking all of that into account, this is the best Daft Punk album to date.
Recommended? Take it or leave it. It wouldn't be a misguided purchase, but don't expect to be blown away after track 4.
