Thoughts— I feel like it's sort of impossible to review stuff like this. I mean, it's Bjork. How can you say something about Debut?
It's likely that you already own this album, or at least you've heard all of the songs on it. If you hate Bjork's voice, then there's really no point in owning any of her music, so I won't bother going into that.
I will say that even her debut album is full of the weirdness and abandon that her latest works are saturated in. But this album, over the most recent ones, is a bit more musical and a LOT more listenable.
It pains me to say it, but I haven't been a big fan of anything beyond and including Medulla. She got a little too harsh for me, and I stopped being able to enjoy her quirky style and crazy lyrics. For that reason above others Debut will be my most listened to Bjork album and my second favorite, probably forever.
Songs like "Venus As A Boy" and "Human Behavior" are now embedded in our culture, used for TV and film almost constantly. "Come To Me" represents possibly the tamest and most "mainstream" of any Bjork song... it is calm, pretty, and understandable.
Whatever Bjork moves on to next, it probably won't have the same impact as Debut did. She's earned her right to be absolutely crazy and to put out albums that are hard to listen to yet enjoy massive mainstream appeal. I just wish she'd make some prettier music again.
Recommended? Unless you hate her voice, you already own it.
