strangest places

abra moore

arista nashville, 1997

Mood—Playful, self-aware, a touch non-conformist.

Sample: "Your Faithful Friend"

Thoughts— The sign of a good 90's "alternative" album, for me, is that I still love the whole thing now. Only a few albums of this type do that for me.

Strangest Places has a good blend of silly and solemn. While the music is rather straightfoward, Moore clearly isn't taking herself too seriously. There's some innovation going on in a few places, but for the most part this is a straight forward and engaging popular album. Any of the singles that made it to radio did the album justice, which almost never happens.

Within a narrow spectrum, this album swings around a bit, from upbeat country-influenced songs to introspective, almost droning tracks. "In Light Of It All" is a good example of the latter.

"Strangest Places", the title track, is mixed in a way that, in 1997, I wouldn't have expected. The drum and bass elements are prominent and distinct. Very interesting.

Unless you're a total downer, there's nothing to dislike from Abra.

Recommended? Yep.
